You’re finally in your new home after an exhausting day of packing, cleaning and saying goodbye to your old house. Surrounded by boxes and excited about your new adventure, you can’t wait to start making this fantastic property your own. But where to start? What should you unpack first when you move home in Burton-upon Trent?
Where to begin
Eager as you are to start ripping open boxes, there are some essential jobs you need to tick off before you can really get started.
Moving day is a chaotic time and with everything going on it can be easy for something to be overlooked. If you have used a moving company, check all your boxes and belongings against your list to make sure that everything has arrived. If you have decided to move yourself, take the time to mark and label all the boxes clearly – you will be very happy you did when it comes to unpacking.
It’s only natural when you arrive at your new home that you will want to give it a once over. Even if the sellers have been incredibly gracious and cleaned it from top to bottom, there is nothing like giving things a clean with your own hands.
At sure Sales & Lettings we suggest that you have a think about where you are going to place your furniture before you arrive at your new home, this will prevent any delays or confusion. Large pieces of furniture and appliances are bound to get in the way, so make sure these are put where you want them as they are brought into your property. Smaller pieces of furniture can be organised later and will be easier to move around.
Make your beds
Your first priority will be to get your bedroom organised. We’re not suggesting that you unpack this room entirely, but get what you need together so at least you can end the day with a good night’s sleep. Reassemble the bed frames and make sure the box with your bedding and pillows is easily accessible so you can make your bed and give those weary bones a place to rest.
In your essentials box, place a change of clothes and PJs – there is no guarantee that you’ll get to unpack everything on the first night. Don’t worry about curtains, a couple of broken down boxes propped up will protect your modesty for the first night – remember, you can’t do everything at once.
Necessities
Another must for your essentials box is your personal items, such as toiletries, any medication, and don’t forget your toothbrush and a towel. Don’t expect there to be any toilet roll, so make sure you have some to hand as you wouldn’t want to be caught short.
One of the first rooms most of us want to organise is the kitchen, and it tends to take a very long time as we play at organising where we want everything to go. But don’t get lost having fun in your kitchen until you have got the things above sorted first.
The little ones
Your children will be feeling unsettled, as it’s a massive change for them. Pack them an essentials box with their favourite things – or, even better, let them pack this themselves. As you are building and making their bed, they can start to unpack their box of treasures and will soon begin to feel at home.
It’s not only your children that will be feeling out of sorts, so too will your pets. We always suggest that they are kept away whilst the moving is taking place, and brought into the home when things are calmer. Pack a box with their must-haves, and don’t wash anything as familiar smells will be just what they need to start feeling settled.
Rome wasn’t built in a day
There is no rule book to say you have to have every room perfect on the first night. It takes time to get to know your home, so let it happen naturally and you will find the whole experience far more enjoyable.
